As a counselor I use Existential Counseling philosophy. 

Feelings of meaninglessness, existential isolation, freedom and death are often the result of the very nature of our existence. I believe individuals must learn to navigate paradoxes that develop naturally in all humans due to the nature of being (Ontology). 

Humans often struggle with being authentic and yet meeting societal expectations and pressures. Thus we must learn to create new meanings (Existential a Priori) for ourselves continually in order to restore a sense of self in an increasingly fast pace and complex world. 

I believe that in order for individuals to be functional and experience authenticity they must take responsibility for their choices and thus exercise freedom. Humans cannot always control what the world throws at you, but individuals can control their response to those events. Anxiety and other neurotic behaviors are often the result of self-perceptions that conflict with the reality of being, particularly in being with others. 

I believe it is the desire of all individuals to seek transcendence and reach for something beyond the human condition. Such self-transcendence permits and individual to be empathetic of others and fosters and environment favorable to authenticity.
